Polaroid film construction involves a complex sandwich of layers including a transparent top sheet, light-sensitive negative layers, timing layers, a light-reflecting white layer, and an opaque back layer. A developing agent pod bursts when the film is ejected, spreading chemicals to create the final image. This multi-layered design allows for a one-step instant process where exposure, chemical development, and image formation happen within the film itself after ejection from the camera. As expensive as film has become I choose to cut open and bleach every Polaroid. Thanks to high output flatbed scanning I am able to archive each image iteration as I turn one piece of film into an original “sandwich” into additional bleached fronts and these abstract backs. We see energy, dark matter, stars, space, and expanse in this portfolio because we chose to explore. Please consider the inherent destruction in the process of creation here when weighing a purchase. While visible imperfections, blur, and strange textures are often cited as technical “flaws”, they are embraced here when printed and framed at large scale. If this concerns you in the slightest, please make contact prior to purchase so that we can turn these characteristics into a strength and study them at magnification or find alternative product.
